Marni Goldman Memorial Symposium at MRS: Abstracts due 6/23/09

The call for papers for the Education Symposium at the Materials Research Society is out. This year, the symposium has been named in honor of Marni Goldman, former Education Director of the Stanford/IBM MRSEC, the Center on Polymer Interfaces and Macromolecular Assemblies (CPIMA). It is very unusual for the MRS to have symposia dedicated to an individual unless that person has a Nobel Prize or has been a leader in a field for many decades. Thus, this is quite an honor.

The sessions in her symposium will be relevant to the educational and professional goals which she pursued with such determination. The initial session will have a short memorial to Marni and a handout of her accomplishments, but the rest of the talks in that session and in those that follow will focus on science or educational initiatives with an emphasis on projects in which she was involved: summer internships, encouraging the disabled to participate in science, public outreach, and Research Experiences for Teachers.

Her session will probably be on Tuesday Dec. 1st, but check the MRS website for the schedule. The final program will depend on abstracts we receive, but the following tentative sessions are the current structure:

Session 1. “Memorial to Marni”: Charles Wade (IBM), Peter Davies (Univ. Pennsylvania), Ron Gronsky or Lisa Pruitt (Univ. of California at Berkeley); Curt Frank (Stanford). These speakers had extensive interaction with Marni.
Session 2. “Knocking Down the Barriers: Facilitating the Participation of the Disabled in Science and Engineering”: Kristin Black (Stanford), Peggy Cebe (Tufts University), former interns in Marni’s programs at Stanford, etc.
Session 3. “Research Experiences for Teachers”: Fiona Goodchild (UC Santa Barbara), Jay Dubner (Columbia University)
Sessions beyond these—chosen from abstracts

The MRS website (www.MRS.org/fall2009) will accept abstracts and registration for this meeting from May 23 through June 23. Nothing will be accepted after June 23. Information on registration, hotels and travel are available there also. I attached the official MRS announcement for the symposium to this post.

We hope that many of you will submit abstracts to talk in the symposium and/or present posters at the meeting.
